Wat up? Strange? Wait? Wha?
The Strange Situation – d’ya freaks?
What’s the song d’ya freaks? on The Strange Situation about? It’s a personal song. About walking home down 4th street on a cold winter night. About walking by construction sites and homeless tents next day, in harsh morning light. About minds broken and lost. About seeing it go down in The City and America.
Meanwhile, folks ask – what guitars is lil’d using on d’ya freaks? – they are super driving. Happy to answer. It’s a 2017 Gibson Firebird Zero though a Fractal Ultra on the intro, and a 1973 Gibson Les Paul through distortion pedals into the board on the ending power riff. The construction sounds are from lil’d’s walk.
The Strange Situation first album. d’ya freaks? The answer is yes.
The Strange Situation – Conflict (It Pushes Us Apart)
This is about the song “Conflict (It Pushes Us Apart)” on the The Strange Situation album.
What if “conflict” was just like Einstein’s theory of special relativity, in which two observers seeing “reality” from different perspectives see a different reality? Special relativity says both observers’ observations are absolutely correct, although different.
Conflict (It Pushes Us Apart) applies special relativity to conflict theory, and postulates that different observers’ perceptions of a “conflict” (they are involved with) are fundamentally correct, although different. The observers act on their observations with the effect of pushing the observers further apart. Perhaps if they recognized that the observer on the other side of the conflict has a fundamentally accurate, but different, perception of the conflict, it might open their minds.
Conflict (It Pushes Us Apart) is a musical thought experiment from The Strange Situation. Keeping it strange just for you!

The Strange Situation 1st Album Cover – Mr. Stanley Strange
The Strange Situation music band was thinking about the album cover for its first album “The Strange Situation.” Hmmm. what shall it be?
A pic of the band? Lookin’ good! A cool line drawing? So artful! Something that defines the “essence” of the band? But of course!
So the band called in beat artist Sean Bell, and told him to have at it. Mr. Bell went to work, and fashioned the iconic Stanley Strange, whose inquisitive face graces the album cover. Stanley Strange knows what strange is about.
And don’t you worry! Stanley Strange is all natural and locally sourced – – scrap wood, baling wire and nuts n’ bolts Mr. Bell found lying around in the ground outside his workshop.

The Strange Situation – Sleepwalk to Work
Wonder where the street sounds come from on The Strange Situation song Sleepwalk to Work? lil’d recorded the street and construction soundscapes walking to work on a couple of Fridays (to be true to the song lyrics – “Friday…I’m so tired”).
The sleepwalk? San Francisco. 9:00 am. Head up 3rd, cutover to 2nd by the ballpark, then up to Market Street. Lots of pre pandemic building and road work. Nothing like heavy construction to get lil’d awake on a Friday morning. And black coffee.
The Strange Situation. Sleepwalk to Work. Know you know.

Recording the “Strange Situation” Song
Thought you might like to know how The Strange Situation records its songs. Here is how the song “Strange Situation” was recorded and produced by lil’d at O-WOW Studios in San Francisco.
The beat was created by lil’d on an Akai MPC X. Two synths are on the song. Wayland Bell plays an Arturia MatrixBrute. Sean Bell plays an Alesis Micron.
On the guitar tracks, lil’d plays a Gibson Firebird Zero. One track is recorded through a Fractal Ultra Processor modeling a Diesel amp, all other tracks are recorded through a Bugera T-5 Infinium Amp set at 1 watt. Effect pedals used are an Ibanez Tube Screamer, a RAT distortion and a Dunlop wah. A goal was to have the guitars sound like police and ambulance sirens.
All tracks are recorded direct into an Akai DPS 24, then bounced to and mixed in ProTools. lil’d’s vocals are recorded direct into ProTools using a vintage Neumann U87 microphone. The song is mixed by lil’d at O-WOW Studios, then mastered by Justin Weis at Trakworx Mastering in San Francisco.
Viola! The song “Strange Situation” by the music band The Strange Situation. It’s a strange situation in San Francisco and this country, for sure. Wanted to convey that feeling and reality in this song.
